About
Carolyn Ellis
Born and raised in Coralville, Iowa, Carolyn is a member of the 2018 graduating class at Hope College. She will be graduating with a bachelors degree in English Literature and Studio Art.
Carolyn became involved with the Brorby Project through the Mellon Scholars Program where she has conducted independent research under the mentorship of Dr. Kraus. Upon learning about Brorby's dual interest in poetry and art, and in reading Ut Pictura Poesis: The Humanistic Theory of Painting by Resselaer W. Lee, Carolyn was immediately invested.
Her individual thesis is on the contemporary influence of other artists, and Brorby's expressionism, self-actualization, and purpose found in the automation of his Yellow Series. Carolyn conducted a phone interview with Brad Bruursema, the friend of Mike Brorby, son of Harry Brorby. The interview began to answer some of the questions about the mystery of Brorby's successful, but largely unknown career as an artist and the personal family dynamic present in the Brorby household.
